The light rail.
The light rail is something we all know is coming, but some still refuse to accept. The light rail will stretch 6.7 Kilometres and cost taxpayers $709 million. Whilst many believe the rail will only increase the human traffic more than it already is, Mark Bailey believes it will only benefit the Burleigh locals, and the rest of the city. Mark Bailey is the Minister of Transport and Main Roads. He stated, “the light rail will bring a balanced transport network”. He also responded to the local concern by saying, “We’ve designed the light rail in sympathy with each local area, they are always done a little differently depending on where it is”.
Young and Emerging Industry professional, Jamie Jackson also believes there is greater benefit to the installation of the light rail network. He stated “there will be a number of benefits from the development of the light rail network. Promoting connectivity in and around the Gold Coast area will subsequently promote greater business and economic activity within major community hubs and business centres. Greater access will be provided to essential city services, restaurants, bars, shops, accommodation, workplaces and many of the unique attractions Burleigh has to offer”.
Burleigh is continuously growing, however there may not be enough amenities to cater for the foot traffic being brought from northern suburbs. Andrew Flemming is a concerned local who believes the already overpopulated Burleigh will only increase. He said in a recent interview, “the usage of the parks on Burleigh hill is just going to intensify, and its already intense as it is”, something all locals can agree with. Despite Andrews efforts to prevent the light rail with a group he formed called “save Burleigh”, it wasn’t enough to stop the development.
